Our History
We have years of experience caring for families, from all walks of life. Each family comes to us because they know we are leaders in our profession, dedicated to excellence in service, and have the highest integrity.
1927, Holm Brothers of the Atwater, Minnesota area purchased the Anderson Hardware Store in Dassel. The Holm's sent Clarence (Kelly) Johnson from Atwater to be the manager and a partner in the hardware store. In November of 1927, they not only operated the hardware store, but started a funeral home with B. A. Holm as embalmer and Kelly Johnson as the funeral director. Kelly later received his embalmers license and served the Dassel Community and surrounding area for many years.
In 1936, the funeral home was moved from downtown Dassel to its present location when Kelly and Mary Johnson purchased the Frank Carlson (originally the Linquist-Hagelin property) home and converted this into a funeral and resident for their family.
In 1960, his son David joined him as a licensed mortician and worked with his Father in the funeral business and the hardware store.
In 1970, David purchased the funeral business from the Holm Brothers Corporation and the name was changed to the Johnson Funeral Home. Kelly and David continue to operated the funeral home together for a number of years.
David and Marcye's son Thomas joined the operation of the funeral home in 2001. In the fall of 2023, the Johnson Family will have served the community of Dassel for 96 years.
