M LaVonne Mortenson

M. LaVonne Mortenson, age 87, of Dassel, died Friday, July 25, 2025, at the Cokato Manor. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel with Rev. Janine Olson officiating. The interment of the urn in the Dassel Community Cemetery. There will be a one-hour time to gather with the family prior to the service on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel. The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel is in charge of the memorial arrangements. Marlys LaVonne (Irvin) Mortenson was born on December 24, 1937, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Charles Clyde and Opal (Webber) Irvin. LaVonne grew up in Stockholm Township where she was baptized and confirmed at the Stockholm Lutheran Church. LaVonne was a 1955 graduate of Cokato High School. LaVonne accepted a position as a hardware clerk at Holm Brothers Hardware Store, when Chris Hansen purchased the Holm Brothers Hardware Store, LaVonne continued as an intricate member of the Hansen Hardware Store until her retirement. On May 8, 1959, LaVonne was united in marriage to Gary Palmer Mortenson at Stockholm Lutheran Church. Together they resided in Dassel for a few years when they purchased the Boo farm southeast of Dassel where they resided until 1987, when they sold the farm and moved to a house on the shore of Lake Washington. In 1998, Gary and LaVonne moved back to Dassel and in 2004, they built a new home in Dassel. LaVonne loved spending time catching up with family and friends. She especially enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, often bragging by telling everyone about how wonderful they were. She was an avid reader and was well-skilled at the art of cross stitching. LaVonne and Gary served as Foster Parents to twenty-three children along with hosting nine foreign exchange students over the years. She will be deeply missed by her family and her many friends. She is survived by her son, Kurtis (Mary) Mortenson of Dassel, grandchildren, Kristina (Kellen) Ryan, Daniel Mortenson (Fiancée, Emma Nicholas) and two great-granddaughters, Adalynn and Piper Ryan, sister-in-law, Bev Irvin of Cokato and a niece, nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Mortenson, her son, Keith Mortenson, a grandson, Jon Kurtis Mortenson, her parents, and her brother, Russell Irvin.
