Hazel Luella Margaret McCarty, age 81, of Dassel, died Saturday, December 15, 2012, at the Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel. The interment will be held at the Dassel Community Cemetery following the service. A visitation will be held on Monday evening from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Hazel Luella Margaret McCarty was born on March 5, 1931, in Forest City Township, Meeker County, Minnesota, to Henry and Emma Bertha (Ross) Zempel. Hazel grew up on the family farm in the Forest City area. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. Matthews Evangelical and Reformed Church of Forest City. Hazel attended grade school in Meeker County and graduated from the Litchfield High School in 1948. On March 4, 1950, Hazel was united in marriage to Harold F. McCarty of McIntosh, Minnesota, at the St. Matthews Evangelical and Reformed Church in Forest City. Together they made their home in Lengby, Minnesota where Harold was a buttermaker. In 1953, they moved to Dassel, where Hazel has made her home since. She had been employed at the 3-M Corporation in Hutchinson from 1967 until her retirement on June 1, 1991. Hazel became a member of the First Lutheran Church, now Gethsemane Lutheran Church, in May of 1959. Hazel had a wonderful voice and enjoyed singing and listening to music, especially old time music with her friend, Rollie in her later years. She enjoyed spending time and taking trips with her children, grandchildren. Hazel loved to visit with her friends in the Dassel Sewing Club and could often be found playing cards and Dominoes at the Senior Center. She will be missed by her friends and family. Hazel is survived by her children; Colleen (Thomas) Christensen of Hutchinson, Cheryl (Timothy) Bischof of Bloomington, Karen (Scott) Sebastian of Three Rivers, Michigan, and Kathryn Green of Houston, Texas, six grandchildren, Steven Bischof, Hannah (Christensen) Duenow, Ariel and Dillon Sebastian, and Ashley and Camille Green, her sister, Lilas Asfeld of Buffalo, and a sister-in-law, Ruth Allen of Cosmos. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Barbara in 1952, her husband, Harold in 1970, parents, one brother, Leo Zempel, and a longtime friend, Rollie Erickson.
